Welcome to the web page for South Tyneside Green Party. Although a relatively new political group in South Tyneside, members of South Tyneside Greens have long been involved in campaigns to green South Tyneside, through direct campaign actions and recently through the important local planning structures, the Regional Spatial Strategy and the Local Development Framework.

South Tyneside Green Party has labelled South Shields MP David Miliband as callous, after the part he played in ensuring that a 40-year injustice continues.
During the 1960s and 70s, the British Government evicted the people of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean. The main island, Diego Garcia, was handed over to the United States government to be used as a military base. US military personnel nicknamed it 'Fantasy Island' for its natural beauty.
Green Party parliamentary candidate for South Shields Shirley Ford expressed her disgust at the ruling.
"David Miliband joins a long line of Foreign Secretaries who have worked to deny the Chagossian people their right to return to their home.
"South Shields has a warm spirit and a big heart. Mr Miliband had a chance to do something right for the Chagossians and let them return home. He has failed the Chagossians, and the spirit of South Shields." more...

South Tyneside Green Party is holding a "Green Q and A" meeting, where the public can grill South Tyneside's Green Party parliamentary candidates Shirley Ford and Bryan Atkinson. The event will be held at Ocean Road Community Centre on Wednesday 8th October at 7pm. Discussion topics will include sustainable economics, free school meals, free home insulation for all and the impact of the Green Party's decision to elect a leader for the first time.. more...

Leaked documents received by Green Party Jarrow parliamentary candidate Bryan Atkinson reveal that South Tyneside council has put the interests of the dairy industry before those of the council tax payer and the environment. A briefing document for the council Cabinet meeting to discuss the issue on Wednesday 25th June also reveals that other council budgets will be raided to pick up the cost of the milk increase. more...

Many people are already 'going green' without realising it - they are prudent, recycle, and reuse their shopping bags. They want better public services which are protected from the ravages of privatisation, to travel on clean and safe public transport - and a world which will be fit to leave to our children.

Bryan Atkinson, Green Party parliamentary candidate for the Jarrow constituency, has pledged his support for the revived wind turbine proposal for the A&P Tyne yard at Hebburn. The Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for South Shields, Shirley Ford, appeared on The Politics Show local segment for the North East to take part in a live debate over incineration. She argued that the local councils which form the South Tyne and Wear Waste Partnership should come clean over their plans, instead of hiding behind the undemocratic cloak of secrecy otherwise known as commercial confidentiality.

South Tyneside Green Party has called on the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform John Hutton to ensure firm support for offshore renewable energy projects, after Mr Hutton's November announcement of plans to build up to 7,000 offshore wind turbines.
Bryan Atkinson, Green Party Parliamentary candidate for Jarrow, has written a letter to Mr Hutton, asking him for "policies that will encourage and drive" the wind turbine proposals. more...

South Tyneside Green Party has condemned the withdrawal of the traditional glass school milk bottles from South Tyneside’s schools. The Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for South Shields, Shirley Ford, has also criticised South Tyneside Council Catering Service for failing to adequately challenge the milk supplier’s decision to replace bottles with cartons made using plastic. more...

Award-winning local environmental campaigner Bryan Atkinson has been selected by the Green Party to stand as prospective parliamentary candidate for the Jarrow constituency.
Bryan, whose youngest daughter attends Jarrow School, has been at the forefront of local green campaigns for several years. He was involved in the the fight against the second Tyne road tunnel and gave evidence to a local public enquiry opposing the destruction of Green Belt land at Fellgate. more...

South Tyneside Green Party has labelled other parties in South Tyneside as the "Soot Squad" for their position on waste incineration. Labour, Progressive and Conservative councillors have warmed to incineration proposals in the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy. The strategy consultation has proposed a form of incineration known as 'Waste from Energy with Combined Heat and Power' (EfW with CHP), similar to the technique used in the disastrous Byker incinerator. more...
The candidates from South Tyneside Green Party would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for us at the local elections. We would also like to offer our gratitude to Paul Winch, Eileen Winch, Phil Talbot and our families for their hard work and support in the run up to the election.
Even though it has been hard work, we've had a great time and met some wonderful people during the campaign. The Greens believe that solutions to regional, national and global problems start at the local level, and that can only happen when people take politics out of the politicians' hands. A healthy society is based on voluntary co-operation between empowered individuals in a democratic society, free from discrimination or prejudice.
Greens practise 'people first' policies, whilst recognising that we also depend on the diversity of the natural world for our existence. The Earth's physical resources are finite. We threaten our future if we try to live beyond those means, so we must build a sustainable society that guarantees our long-term future, for us and our children. Every person, in this and future generations, should be entitled to basic material security as of right.
